Installing a data logger to monitor heat recovery system performance can be simple and does not require permanently installing a flow meter because once known, the flow in the closed heat recovery loop will remain a constant.
Measuring it once, without penetrating the pipe and without leaving a mechanical flow meter installed in the system is the preferred method.
