Using HotSpot Heat Recovery with
Walk-In Coolers & Freezers

Walk-in coolers and freezers present ideal opportunities for heat recovery because the compressors operate every day of the year regardless of the weather.

Industry standard design run time for walk-in coolers and freezers of 16 hours per day makes
heat recovery and savings very predictable.

It's fairly easy to calculate the amount of expected heat recovery and savings obtainable from a walk-in application by using the HotSpot performance data along with the compressor size, because when walk-in coolers and freezers are built the compressor is sized for a consistant daily run time. You can determine your approximate daily BTU recovery by multiplying the tons of capacity by the run time and then multiply this by the BTU per ton data.

For example, a customer with average entering water temperature of 70F, with a 5 ton walk-in cooler compressor running an average of 16 hours per day year round would recover BTU as follows:

BTU recovery per ton = 3053
Unit size = 5 tons
Hours run per day = 16
BTU recovery per day = 244,240 BTU per day

BTU recovered in a 30 day month = 7,327,200 per month
7,327,200 BTU per month = 2149 kWh per month

If your cost per kWh is $.10, your water heating energy savings would be $ $214.90 per month or $2,579 per year.
